A Victorian Desk Set to MakeHere is a Victorian desk set you can make that will lend the Victorian feeling to your desk or office space. These instructions (edited for on-line purposes) were published in Harper’s Bazaar in 1889. All the designs are from the South Kensington School. ![]() Fig. 1 – Stationery Box Click on picture to see more detail. ![]() Fig. 2 – Calendar Frame Click on picture to see more detail. ![]() Fig. 3 – Bradshaw Cover Click on picture to see more detail. ![]() Fig. 4 – Telegram Case Click on picture to see more detail. ![]() Fig. 5 – Postal Card Case Click on picture to see more detail. ![]() Fig. 6 – Desk Blotter Click on picture to see more detail. Figs. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 are uniform in style, and are one and all adaptations of the same design, though worked in different colors; white linen is the material used. The design is outlined with Japanese gold thread. The stalks are filled in with dark blue, whilst the veins and markings of the flowers and leaves are of a darker shade of the same color with the exception of the stalks there is no solid work, but the entire ground is evenly darned over with pale blue. We describe the blotter, but the other articles are worked in various shades of red, brown, green, etc. The linings of satin or sateen being of the dark shade used for the stalks. A writing-table set in this special style should of course be worked in the same color throughout. Return to top of Victorian Desk Set page. Return to Victorian Christmas page. Return to Home page.
